SARDINA SYSTEMS and GRASS-MERKUR

A Strong Partnership

FishOS from Sardina Systems combines OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph into a highly automated platform that is also used in research and the public sector.

As an official reseller, we at GRASS-MERKUR offer this technology through HAN-CLOUD, which is operated at the Hannover Security Data Center.

Background

Between Research Growth and Mandatory Certification

Sardina Systems implemented this project independently of GRASS-MERKUR. We present it as an example of FishOS in practice.

The de.NBI Cloud Tübingen provides the German bioinformatics community with computing power for genomics, proteomics, and multi-omics analyses. As data volumes grew and demands for security and availability increased, so did the need for a robust, certifiable cloud platform.

The de.NBI Cloud Tübingen comprises over 6,720 CPU cores and 32 PB of storage capacity.

Our Areas of Expertise

  • HAN-CLOUD on FishOS: as an official reseller in the ISO 27001-certified data center in Hanover.
  • Cloud Strategy: We advise you on which cloud model is right for your business.
  • Digital Sovereignty: You retain control over your data, infrastructure, and operations.
  • Compliance: We help you meet the requirements of NIS2, DORA, and KRITIS.

Your Added Value with FishOS

  • Certifiable: Automation and flexibility enabled us to achieve ISO 27001:2022 certification on our own.
  • Zero-downtime upgrade: Updates without interrupting ongoing operations.
  • Migration of existing environments: A system was migrated from Ubuntu OpenStack.
  • One platform: OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph in a single solution.
  • Future-proof: The infrastructure scales with data volumes and security requirements.
  • German data storage for sensitive research data.

Solution

Automated FishOS Platform Enables Independent ISO 27001 Certification

Sardina Systems implemented a FishOS solution based on OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph for a total of four systems—including a zero-downtime upgrade and the migration of one system from Ubuntu OpenStack.

Thanks to the automation and flexibility of FishOS, de.NBI Cloud Tübingen was able to achieve ISO 27001:2022 certification on its own—without technical support from Sardina Systems.

A reliable and stable OpenStack environment is crucial for a resilient research infrastructure.

Results

01 Holistic Solutions

FishOS combines OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Ceph into a single platform—from implementation to zero-downtime upgrades, all four systems were handled by a single provider at the Tübingen site.

02 Close Support from Sardina Systems

Sardina Systems provided support for the implementation and operation. The de.NBI team subsequently implemented the ISO 27001 certification on its own.

03 Secure Infrastructure

The Research Cloud has achieved ISO 27001:2022 certification—a proven secure foundation for sensitive research data from the German bioinformatics community.

04 Data Stored in Germany

The de.NBI Cloud at its Tübingen site operates its systems in Germany—serving as the central infrastructure for genomics, proteomics, and multi-omics analyses across the German research community.

05 Future-Proof Digitalization

FishOS's automation and flexibility provide the foundation for managing growing data volumes and future security requirements over the long term.
