Background
Outsource data center operations, connect locations
An IT service provider wanted to make its data center operations more cost-effective and migrate to an additional colocation site capable of multi-tenant operations. The goal was to reduce the burden on internal resources and connect multiple locations via fiber optics and DWDM in a high-performance, fail-safe manner.
This involved strict requirements for security, availability, and compliance: Sensitive data and systems had to be reliably protected, business-critical processes secured, and audit and reporting obligations met. Added to this were the need to demonstrate relevant certifications, ensure energy-efficient data center operations, and comply with the requirements for critical infrastructure (KRITIS).

Solution
Data Center, Cloud, and Backup—All from a Single Source
GRASS-MERKUR provides the IT service provider with colocation space in a certified secure data center. Data center operations are outsourced, multi-tenant, and scale with demand.
The locations are connected via dedicated fiber-optic lines and managed DWDM services. GRASS-MERKUR operates the connections with redundancy and designs them for low latency.
Managed backup safeguards the data, and the tape media are stored in a data protection vault. The infrastructure runs on green electricity and utilizes efficiency management to reduce its environmental footprint.
Results
The outsourced operation supports multiple clients, and the IT service provider does not need to set up its own facilities or operational structures to do so.
The connection between the locations is no longer set up and monitored in-house, but is instead used as a service.
Certifications for the secure data center provide documentation for audits and reporting requirements and facilitate the audit process.
The physical backup media are also secured, which enhances the integrity of the backup.
The environment is designed for resilience and the protection of critical infrastructure and supports continuous operational capability.
